John Wynne - 215 Unwanted Speakers

Monday 8th - Monday 29th May

Sound artist John Wynne will made use of 215 discarded (but working) hi-fi speakers he collected in London and Berlin to create a site-specific installation for the former potato warehouse which is now the Hull Art Lab.

Through the use of the aural equivalent of an optical illusion, the piece used sound to re-fill this forlorn and empty architectural receptacle, exploring the nature of spectacle as well as the relationship between looking and hearing.

The final form taken by the piece was determined during the process of making it within the space Hull Art Lab, which was open to the public during this process. The collective personalities of these rejected pieces of consumer technology, projected through their design, through the marks of use and misuse, through the modifications carried out by their owners and even through their individual smells, may immediately suggest a field of social tension, but the interpretation of possible narratives is left to the audience.
