Matthew Tickle - Punctum & Nebula

Matthew Tickle's new installation for Hull Art Lab explores how small-scale discrete objects and events (punctum) combine to form large-scale structures. Interpretation hinges upon the scale at which objects are viewed. At a high enough magnification a nebulous object may be resolved into individual particles, perversely, at a lower one, it can assume a distinct form. This is illustrated by billboard images, which are composed of small dots of colour that at the right distance combine to form a recognisable image. There is a complex interplay between the viewer and the objects of perception; consciousness and attention have a similarly entangled relationship. If our attention becomes focused on one thing, for instance a perceived threat, our awareness of other events can be suppressed. Tickle's installation will bring together elements as disparate as background radiation, strobe light, sound and billboard images to create an exhibition in which attention, and the physical presence of the viewer are challenged.

Born London 1964, Matthew lives and works in London. Recent shows include: Nothing Will Come Of Nothing, Wolsey Art Gallery, Ipswich; Semi-Rhythm, Whitechapel Project Space, London; What The Eye Can't See The Heart Can't Grieve For , a temporary public artwork at Queen Mary, University of London.
